Top features of the iPhone XR

Apple's newly released iPhone XR is the most budget-friendly flagship iPhone. AppleInsider breaks down the top nine features of this colorful handset to show why it is worth your consideration.

Liquid Retina display

Apple has included the all-new Liquid Retina LCD as the display on the iPhone XR. It may be an LCD rather than the OLED display found on the XS/XS Max, but it is still a beautiful display.
Colors pop, as it supports the P3 wide color gamut, and Apple claims it is the most color accurate LCD on the market.

It is also impressively large for Apple's entry-level iPhone, a whole 6.1 inches in size, larger than the iPhone XS and the largest LCD Apple has ever included on an iPhone. It still comes in a tad shy of the 6.5-inch OLED on the XS Max, but it is still a great sized screen.

The Liquid Retina display is also the first LCD Apple has made to include Tap to Wake functionality. Last but not least, it even supports True Tone for subtle adjustments based on the environments ambient light.

Single-lens Portrait mode

Portrait mode photos have taken off, being one of the most used features of the iPhone X and its dual camera system.

iPhone XR Camera

For the iPhone XR, Apple is only including a single lens assembly, but they are still able to replicate the Portrait mode effect via software and their upgraded Neural Engine.

With just a single camera, the iPhone XR can detect a person's face then separate them from the background, applying a subtle bokeh effect to everything but the subject. It can even be adjusted after the fact with Apple's depth control feature for fine-tuning the amount of blur and bokeh.

Symmetrical speaker ports

Talk about little touches, but the iPhone XR has symmetrical ports on the bottom of the device. Each side of the Lightning port six circles either used for the speaker or the microphone.

On the iPhone XS/XS Max, there are four circles to the left of the Lightning port and seven on the right.

This doesn't have any change in functionality, but it brings a good balance to the phone.

Colorful finishes

In a similar vein to the iPhone 5C, Apple released the iPhone XR with a smattering of color options. Both the glass back and the metal frame are brightly colored for a fun pop.

The glass uses an in-depth seven-layer color process to achieve the rich finish and the Apple-exclusive aluminum alloy is anodized to match.

Color options include white, black, blue, yellow, coral, and (PRODUCT)RED.

Lightweight aluminum frame

Buyers of the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max will know the hefty stainless steel frame that their phone is built on.

For the XR, Apple opted for an aircraft-grade custom aluminum alloy with a matte finish instead. It keeps the phone exceptionally lightweight and durable, while still able to show off those vivid colorful finishes.

Exclusive wallpapers

Each of the new iPhone XR color options come pre-loaded with custom wallpapers that are color matched with their exterior.

Our blue model, for example, features a bright blue wallpaper background. These wallpapers look great and only come with the XR. Good news is that each iPhone XR comes with all color variations of the two primary wallpaper designs for a total of 12 wallpapers no other iPhone ships with.

Haptic Touch

Instead of 3D Touch, the iPhone XR replicates the experience using what Apple calls "Haptic Touch". Instead of having a 3D sensing display, a long press simulates the effect. Whenever you long touch on an applicable element, it will perform a similar 3D Touch action and the phone will provide feedback in form of a slight vibration.

There are certainly limitations, for instance, you can't Haptic Touch Home screen icons to view widgets and actions, but you can still get into widgets within Control Center.

Apple says this functionality will expand over time, showing in other places 3D Touch used to exist, such as the aforementioned widgets and previewing links.

Battery life

Of all the iPhones Apple sells, the iPhone XR boasts the most impressive battery performance. Apple says it can achieve up to 25 hours of wireless talk time, 15 hours of internet browsing, and 16 hours of video playback.

These stats put the XR above both the iPhone XS and XS Max in terms of battery longevity.

Create your own Memoji

Create your own Memoji.
Todd Haselton | CNBC
Create your own Memoji.
If you have a device with Face ID (the iPhone X, iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max), you can now create a custom digital version of yourself. It's a lot of fun, since you can record audio and use the Memoji to mimic your facial expressions before sending a clip off to a friend in iMessage.
Here's how:
  • Open iMessage
  • Tap the Monkey icon at the bottom of the screen
  • Scroll to the left and tap the + button
  • Design a caricature of yourself
  • Now, whenever you tap the Monkey icon, you'll see your custom Memoji that you can send to friends.

Batch your notifications

New Notifications in iOS 12
New Notifications in iOS 12
This is a big one. The system gives you a lot more control over your notifications, so you're not constantly being bombarded by alerts. Now, when you swipe down from the screen, you'll notice that app notifications are bundled together — instead of one for each alert from a single app. Tap it to expand and see every notification. You can also manage them by doing this:
  • Select a notification
  • Swipe left across the screen
  • Tap "Manage"
  • Choose "Deliver quietly" if you don't want it to play a sound when the alert comes in, or choose "Turn off" to deactivate the notification entirely.

Set time limits for the apps you use with Screen Time

Set Screen Time limits for your apps.
A new feature in iOS 12 lets you limit how long you use certain types of apps. If you think you spend too much time on Facebook at work, for example, you can set a limit so that you can't use Facebook for more than two hours a day (or any time limit of your choosing). This applies to all sorts of categories, not just social networking.
Here's how to use Screen Time:
  • Open Settings
  • Tap Screen Time
  • Select "App Limits"
  • Tap "Add Limit"
  • Choose a category, like Games or Social Networking
  • Tap "Add"
  • Choose how long you want to set the time limit for.

See how much time you spend using certain apps

See how long you use certain apps on your phone.

See how long you use certain apps on your phone.
This is part of Screen Time, and it can help you see how much you're using certain apps. To do this:
  • Open Settings.
  • Tap "Screen Time."
  • Tap the area at the top of the page where it says iPhone (or iPad if you're on an iPad).
  • Scroll down the page to see what your most used apps are each day.
  • Tap the "Last 7 days" tab at the top of the screen to see which apps you used during the last week.

Use Siri shortcuts

Set Siri Shortcuts
Todd Haselton | CNBC
Set Siri Shortcuts
This is really cool. Siri gets a power boost in iOS 12 with Siri Shortcuts, which allows it to tap into third party apps. You can ask about upcoming trips through TripIt, for example or run a few tasks in a row, like automatically open up Maps with a route to work and your favorite morning playlist.
Here's how to get started:
  • Download the Shortcuts app from the App Store
  • Open Shortcuts.
  • Tap "Create Shortcut."
  • Choose one of the presets. I recommend starting with "Get Current Song."
  • Tap "Allow Access" to your music library.
  • Tap "OK."
  • Tap the blue and white icon on the top right of the app.
  • Name the Shortcut. I just used the generic "Get current song."
  • Tap "Done."
  • Tap "Done" again.
Now, when you say, "Siri, get current song," it will analyze the music that's playing and tell you what song it is.
Some other fun ones: Create a shortcut for heading to work that shows traffic and plays your music. Or create one that automatically takes a picture when you speak "Siri, say cheese." Or set one that automatically calls into a meeting using your conference number and code. There's a lot to dig through, so play around.
You can also set third-party app shortcuts by doing this:
  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Siri & Search.
  • Choose an app — like TripIt, which is an early one to support this new feature.
  • If it has custom shortcuts, you'll see an option called "Shortcuts." Tap it.
  • Tap one of them. In TripIt, for example, you can set one for "Upcoming travel plans."
Now, when you say "Siri, upcoming travel plans" it will tap into TripIt return your upcoming trip results.

Play with new camera effects

Have fun with your pictures with stickers and text.

Have fun with your pictures with stickers and text.
Now, when you take a picture right from the iMessage app, you can draw on it, add stickers and more. Here's how to do that:
  • Open iMessage.
  • Tap the Camera button on the bottom left.
  • Tap the star icon on the bottom left.
  • Scroll through the menu on the bottom and add text, stickers, filters and more.
  • Snap your picture and send it.

Use a virtual tape measure to see how long things are

Here's how to use it:
  • Open the Measure app on your iPhone.
  • Follow the instructions as it walks you through how to scan the room.
  • Point the circle in an area you'd like to start measuring from and then tap the + button.
  • Now choose your end point and tap the + button again.
  • You'll get a measurement.
  • Tap the measurement to save it directly to your notepad.

Use Downtime to silence your phone

Set some Downtime restrictions.
Todd Haselton | CNBC
Set some Downtime restrictions.
Apple's iOS already had a "Do not Disturb" mode, but now there's a more in-depth "Downtime" option that's part of Screen Time. It's great for bedtime, so that only certain apps can send you notifications and only certain people can reach you. Here's how to use it:
  • Open Settings.
  • Tap Screen Time.
  • Tap Downtime.
  • Set your time limits. I set mine from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Go back to the Screen Time page.
  • Select "Always allowed."
  • Tap the green + button next to each app you want to receive notifications from, even during Downtime hours.

Check out changes in Photo gallery

See recommendations inside the Apple Photos app.
Todd Haselton | CNBC
See recommendations inside the Apple Photos app.
The Photo gallery has a couple of new changes, too. A new "For You" tab shows you memories, like pictures you might have taken in the past. There are also "Sharing Suggestions," which gathers a bunch of photos that the app thinks you might want to send off to certain family or friends. If you share from a certain event that friends might have attended also, Photos will recommend that your friends also share those photos with you.
To see some of these new features, do this:
  • Open Photos.
  • Tap the "For You" tab at the bottom.
  • Scroll up and down the page to see what's recommended.

Use Google Maps and Waze in CarPlay

Apple CarPlay.
The operating system lets you use third-party mapping services besides Apple Maps when you plug your phone into a car that has Apple CarPlay support. This means that you can use Waze and Google Maps instead of Apple Maps, which is really useful if you prefer one of those. You don't need to do a whole lot, but it's worth checking out if you didn't know it was there. To get started:
  • Make sure Waze and/or Google Maps is installed on your iPhone.
  • Plug your iPhone into a car with CarPlay.
  • Tap the apps button on your car's screen.
  • Choose Google Maps or Waze.

Change the background blur on a Portrait picture

Adjust the bokeh in your photos after you've snapped them.
Todd Haselton | CNBC
Adjust the bokeh in your photos after you've snapped them.
If you have an iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max, you can now change the bokeh, or the background blur, after you've snapped a Portrait picture. It allows you to adjust how strong the effect is, and can help your pictures look much more professional. To do this:
  • Take a portrait picture with the camera app. (Open camera and scroll to Portrait.)
  • Now open the picture.
  • Tap "Edit."
  • Scroll with the bar just to the left of the camera, where it says "Depth."
  • You'll see the blur change in real time.
  • Tap "Done" to save.

Top 10 Android security tips

1. Disable app downloads from unknown sources
The easiest way to get infected with malware on an Android phone or tablet is to start installing apps from outside the official Google Play app store. In the Settings menu of any standard Android device is a check box that enables and disables installing ‘unofficial’ apps. An Android that keeps itself legit is far safer.
2. Upgrade to Android 3.0 or above
The first version of Android to incorporate file system encryption was Android 3.0, almost three years into the system’s life. Devices that do not use any kind of data encryption are all the more susceptible to damaging data loss.
3. Download an anti-malware app
Now that Android malware and viruses are a widely-recognised part of the smartphone world, there are many solutions to combat them. Most of the big antivirus (AV) companies have their own Android anti-malware apps, including Kaspersky, AVG, Avast and Norton. Recommended free Android AV apps include Lookout (where there is also a premium version available) and TrustGo.
4. Do not connect to unsecured, unknown Wi-Fi networks
An unsecured Wi-FI network can seem like a cheeky goldmine of free internet, but if you’re using an outdated version of Android in particular, it could prove dangerous. Imposter Wi-Fi networks can be used to stage a ‘middleman’ attack, where any inputted data can be intercepted by a third party – including passwords and personal details, such as credit card numbers.
5. Install a remote wipe/lock app
If an Android device is lost or stolen, it is sensible to have a way to wipe or lock it. There are apps available from Google Play that will do just that, reacting to either a command from a web interface or via text. Popular remote wipe and lock apps include Cerberus and Avast Mobile Security.
6. Keep all sensitive data behind an extra encryption layer
Keeping sensitive information logged in a generic note on a phone or tablet is a bad idea. There are plenty of apps that will store information behind a double wall of password protection and encryption. Top picks include mSecure and File Hide Expert.
7. Be aware of SMS threats
Premium SMS threats are partly responsible for the surge in Android malware. The Obad threat, which was brought to light earlier this year, can send premium rate SMS texts, install other malicious apps and execute other code. If there is mysterious activity on a phone bill, check it is not down to this type of attack.
8. Use the Chrome browser
Since Android 4.1 was introduced, phones and tablets have come with the stock Android browseras well as Chrome installed as standard. Chrome is marginally more secure than the stock version, having been subject to fewer publicised insecurities in recent months. It is also likely that Chrome for Android is being more keenly worked on, its pre-installed status marking it out as the future default browser for Android.
9. Put a lock on your lock screen
Simple but necessary, anyone with a concern about Android security should put some lock screen protection on their phone. Virtually all Androids come with optional security measures pre-installed, accessed in the security submenu of settings.
10. Stolen phone? Check out Plan B
Many have done it – had a phone lost or stolen just before planning to buy phone insurance or install a phone tracker. There is one last point of call. Try to install Plan B to the phone from the Google Play website and, if successful, it will automatically send the location of the device to the Gmail account linked to it.
